We’ve just added a few curious lots: a Tibetan strongbox once hidden in the hills near Senigallia, a rather striking telephone from the 1920s, and a handful of beautiful Mario Giacomelli photographs, recently surfaced from the home of a close friend.

Quattro sarde, Ancona, 1972. Huile sur toile, 60×80 cm (hauteur, largeur), signé, cadre d’époque What a strange surprise! We had barely received confirmation that the auction would take place in the old fish market of the town’s magnificent Neoclassical hall when two locals appeared, bringing us this painting of sardines. Thanks to the kindness of renowned Paris experts, we were able to refine our description of the following painting. (Name “Chardin” inscribed on the verso). French School, 18th century. Destruction of a City (Babylon? Sodom?), circa 1750 Oil on canvas, 33 × 35 cm, relined fragment from a larger horizontal composition, mounted on an altered and reinforced period stretcher This fragment depicts a dramatic scene of destruction, blending elements of antique architecture with others of medieval inspiration. It is most likely an allegory of the fall of a mythical or biblical city, rather than a direct representation of a known historical event such as Pompeii or Lisbon.
Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699–1779) is not associated with this type of subject matter, nor is he known to have signed works on the reverse. However, the handwriting bears a notable resemblance to authenticated signatures, including one dated 1759. To date, no documentary evidence (sale, inventory, collection) has emerged to clarify its provenance. This enigmatic fragment, uncertain in its attribution, draws attention through the quality of its painted surface, the strength of its composition, and the intriguing presence of a prestigious name. A patient inquiry may one day reveal its true origin.
Oak wood, 208 × 66 × 123 cm. “The Cavour desk was conceived by architect Carlo Mollino (Turin, 1905–1973) for the furnishings of Casa Orengo in Turin. The desk consists solely of the parallelepipeds of the drawer unit and single drawer, the transparent top, and the supporting spine. Its elegance is owed to the cold-bending technique (developed and patented by Mollino himself), which allows for a light, dynamic form inspired by organic movement. The lightness, a fundamental feature of the piece, is determined both by the choice of construction materials-maple wood-and by the dynamic shape of the legs. Mollino, trained as an architect, also worked as a designer in the 1940s, creating furniture often made as unique pieces. With these works, Mollino sought to merge artisanal tradition with experimentation in new materials and technologies, resulting in original objects characterized by total formal freedom and remarkable structural innovation, such as this desk with its ‘aeronautical structure,’ as the author himself described it.” Provenance: Private home, Senigallia. Sole owner since the late 1950s.
“Il Gatto bianco” (Verrà la morte e avrà i tuoi occhi, 1957) Early silver print, 23,5×31 cm, printed ca. 1970 and signed twice by the artist, lower right corner, signed again on verso
