That’s when the classic game would begin: trying to select a drawing, a painting, a piece of furniture, or an interesting object whose asking price was not out of proportion, but remained reasonable. Negotiation could be a very long process in Italy, where it is considered impolite not to bargain for a discount.
During the two months of preparing for the auction, several families from Senigallia came to see us and also offered a few interesting paintings and pieces of furniture that had become a bit cumbersome in their new apartments. This dynamic has allowed us to present the catalogue you see today, and we hope that such a sale can be held in Senigallia on a regular basis.

Oil on canvas, 69 × 60 cm. This is one of the many versions of the miracle of the earthquake: according to tradition, as soon as Emidio arrived in Ascoli (around the year 300 or 303), he touched the city walls, and immediately all the pagan temples-and only those-collapsed as a result of a violent earthquake. Fourteen centuries later, in 1703, a powerful earthquake struck the Marche region, but the city of Ascoli was spared, thanks, it is said, to the protection of its patron saint. Saint Emidio is still venerated today as a powerful protector against earthquakes. Perhaps every home should have its own image of Saint Emidio, to watch over its inhabitants and keep them safe when the earth begins to tremble. Provenance: PP Collection, Senigallia Signed Chardin (Jean-Siméon Chardin?). Destruction of a City (Babylon? Sodom?), circa 1760 Oil on canvas, 33 × 35 cm (height × width), signed on the stretcher: “Chardin”. The city depicted combines elements of ancient architecture with features reminiscent of a medieval city. The composition is more allegorical than a depiction of a specific destruction, such as Pompeii or Lisbon. The renowned painter Chardin is not known to have produced this type of subject, nor to have signed his works on the reverse of the stretcher. However, the signature is authentic, period, and matches that of the master, even if its presence here cannot be explained. Comparison with another signature dated 1759 confirms this attribution.
Oak wood, 208 × 66 × 123 cm. “The Cavour desk was conceived by architect Carlo Mollino (Turin, 1905–1973) for the furnishings of Casa Orengo in Turin. The desk consists solely of the parallelepipeds of the drawer unit and single drawer, the transparent top, and the supporting spine. Its elegance is owed to the cold-bending technique (developed and patented by Mollino himself), which allows for a light, dynamic form inspired by organic movement. The lightness, a fundamental feature of the piece, is determined both by the choice of construction materials-maple wood-and by the dynamic shape of the legs. Mollino, trained as an architect, also worked as a designer in the 1940s, creating furniture often made as unique pieces. With these works, Mollino sought to merge artisanal tradition with experimentation in new materials and technologies, resulting in original objects characterized by total formal freedom and remarkable structural innovation, such as this desk with its ‘aeronautical structure,’ as the author himself described it.” Provenance: Private home, Senigallia. Sole owner since the late 1950s.
