Most Wanted

140 years ago, Bertillon achieved his greatest success by demonstrating that photography could be a formidable tool in the service of the police to prevent crime, as it enabled him to arrest Ravachol, France’s most famous anarchist.

Ravachol is smiling in this astonishing photo taken by Bertillon at the Paris police headquarters. He is not hostile, as we see in some classic images from the history of photography, where criminals seem to struggle like demons to keep their souls and appearance intact.

Since then, millions, tens of millions of human beings have been photographed by the police, sometimes simply as a preventive measure, like the anarchists of yesteryear, or more often for committing tiny misdemeanors or serious crimes, like President Donald Trump recently, it seems. Whatever the modality, these police photographs, these anthropometric portraits, are part of the celebrity and passage to posterity of these men and women, sometimes anonymously, sometimes accompanied by veritable written or filmed sagas for having taken part in certain famous chapters in the history of crime.
