SENIGALLIA, REBORN 1 THOUSAND TIMES

Phoenix, Senigallia three days after the flooding (Paolo Monina, 18 September 2022)

_______

On September 15, 2022, severe flooding in the Marche region badly affected the Misa river basin, from the spring in the mountains to the city of Senigallia on the Adriatic coast. Worldwide reporting of the mud invasion emphasized that it was due to climate change.

_______

The Misa valley was better known as a human route and Senigallia, as a city often found on the road of ancient times warlords, Gauls, Romans, Carthaginians, Elephants, Ostrogoths, Vandals, Wisigoths, Byzantines, Sicilians, Saracens …

The verses of Dante’s Paradise refer to the complete destruction of the City by the army of Manfredi, in 1260. This time, the reconstruction process was slow, achieved only after 200 years by the famous Duke of Urbino who called artists and architects for papers and projects : “la Cittá Ideale.”

The 1930 earthquake had several consequences : all Renaissance palaces lost upper floors and new construction was limited to 3 floors only, the old streets receive now more day-light, for the pleasure of photographers; an elegant modern style neighborhood was built with a famous rotonda a mare and the whole city invested in sea tourism infrastructure.

After 2014 flooding, the 2022 flood was rather unexpected. Fortunately, in Senigallia, inhabitants could climb to upper floors but stores and underground garages were severely hit.
