28.03.2025 The Biennale Program Takes Shape – Time to Plan Your Visit in June 2025!

To commemorate the centenary of Mario Giacomelli, inventor, typographer and poet, the Biennale di Senigallia is honoring Nicephore Niepce, the first inventor, and Arthur Rimbaud, the young poet who wanted to become a photographer.

A Celebration of the Invention of Photography

The Senigallia Biennale will take place June 18-21, 2025. This year, we will explore the origins of photography, focusing on Joseph Nicéphore Niépce on the bicentennial of his pioneering work.

The main exhibition unravels the mystery of photography’s birth. Discover how Niépce’s 1820s heliography process changed visual history forever. Stand before the remarkable story of “View from the Window at Le Gras”(1826)—the world’s first permanent photograph captured on a pewter plate after a five or six-days exposure.

We will present rare documents, historic equipment, and contemporary interpretations to illuminate Niépce’s contributions. Our aim is to provide insight into the technical innovations and artistic vision that gave birth to photography.

Cardinal d’Amboise portrait was one of the earliest successful attempts at photomechanical reproduction. This image represents a significant step in Niépce’s quest to create multiple copies from a single photographic plate, foreshadowing the future of photographic printing.

An Exhibition with Assorted Artefacts

In the Palazzetto Baviera, fives rooms will be dedicated to five key figures in the invention of photography, exploring their unique or controversal contributions and lasting influence:

Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre, Eugène Hubert, William Henry Fox Talbot, Hippolyte Bayard.

Rare and unusual pieces on loan from private collectors and museums will complement each room, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the early days of photography.

A special display will feature the original manuscript of the first treatise on the artistic nature of photography, written in 1839-1840 and published in France in 1840. This extraordinary document, of which only two printed copies survive, will provide insight into early perceptions of photography as an art form.

The Mystery of the Invention of Photography

The Italian landscape will be featured through a first-time exhibition of photomontages from 1866, created from calotypes dating back to 1853. These photographic innovations were carried out at the initiative of the Société Française de Photographie (SFP) to experiment with a printing process on a new albumen paper that foreshadowed the extraordinary improvements that would soon transform photography.

These works represent a pivotal moment in photographic history, when the medium was transitioning from a complex, labor-intensive craft requiring numerous manipulations to a much more accessible and rapid process. The exhibition will showcase how these experimental techniques anticipated the industrial developments that would eventually allow amateurs to practice photography with the support of manufacturers.

This revolution was indeed as significant as the later transition from analog to digital photography and coincided with the economic revolution of the first globalisation (1870-1914). Photography both documents and participates in the two waves of globalization.

The Pleasure of Discovering New Chapters

Several rooms in the Palazzetto Baviera will be dedicated to contemporary artists paying tribute to the inventors of photography. These artists will also participate in conferences and workshops offered to visitors exploring historic photographic techniques.

The other major exhibition is devoted to a French poet well-known to Italians and to young people worldwide: Arthur Rimbaud.

Rimbaud fascinates collectors because his portraits (both of him or by him) are extremely rare and continue to spark passionate debates.

He also intrigues historians and biographers, as there is now little doubt that his second great project was to become a photographer in Ethiopia, with plans to produce an artist’s book or explorer’s book featuring photographs of regions never before seen or explored.

Following Rimbaud off-the-beaten-path

The recent discovery of a small portrait—a visiting card of a young man photographed in Vienna—has sparked a meticulous investigation. This exhibition invites visitors to form their own conclusions by examining the collected evidence, clues, and arguments surrounding this intriguing find.

The collector’s fair, the conference, and talks by artists and scholars will take place during the weekend of the Festa de la musica and the summer solstice, creating a unique moment to celebrate art, nature, and creativity.

The Biennale, with the support of the town of Senigallia, provides accommodation for invited speakers. We currently have two openings for presenters specializing in the history of photography. Interested scholars should submit their proposals by April 15, 2026.

The special photography fair, which will be held on the afternoon of Friday, June 20, and the morning of Saturday, June 21, 2025, will focus on the theme of portraits: antique portraits, beloved portraits, celebrity portraits, and portraits of the unknown.

This fair continues the tradition established in previous Biennale editions, where galleries and collectors gathered to showcase rare and significant photographic works. The event will take place during the IV Biennale di Senigallia (June 19-21, 2025), coinciding with the Summer Solstice and the Festa della Musica.
