A different catalogue of a collection of photographs, with a precise description of the date and circumstances of the printing of every picture. Of the printing and also of the negative.

The John G. Morris Photo Diary visually recounts Morris’s distinguished career and sheds new light on his position at the heart of photojournalism, while complementing his autobiography Get the Picture. The Diary begins with his early life as a student at the University of Chicago where he created and edited the student magazine Pulse. After graduating, he worked for Life magazine and became the magazine’s London picture editor during the Allied invasion of Normandy. Morris is respon- sible for saving Robert Capa’s legendary eleven images of D-Day after the melted emulsion accidentally destroyed most of the precious negatives. The Diary also includes Morris’s own work as a photographer in France, where he worked alongside war correspondents, as seen in prints of his image of a young German prisoner, German Surrender in Normandy, or his own Annotated Rennes Contact Sheet from the Liberation of France. Also included in this section is a rare image of Capa at Work n° 28, that shows Capa photographing the surrender of German Soldiers.

Barbara Hutton was dubbed the “Poor Little Rich Girl”. “Barbara Woolworth Hutton (November 14, 1912 – May 11, 1979) was an American debutante, socialite, heiress and philanthropist. She was dubbed the “Poor Little Rich Girl,” first when she was given a lavish and expensive debutante ball in 1930, amid the Great Depression, and later due to a notoriously troubled private life. Heiress to the retail tycoon Frank Winfield Woolworth, Hutton was one of the wealthiest women in the world… Hutton had one child, Lance Reventlow, with her second husband, but Reventlow’s parents’ marriage, Hutton’s second of seven, was tumultuous and did not last; after the couple divorced in 1938, Reventlow became the subject of a bitter custody battle. In 1944, Reventlow’s father was awarded custody until he reached school age, after which his mother would gain custody. Before his father was to relinquish custody, he sent Reventlow to Canada. Hutton regained custody of Reventlow in 1945. Reventlow was largely estranged from his father until the Count’s death in 1969. In 1948, at age 12, Reventlow was introduced to the world of Grand Prix motor racing when his mother married Prince Igor Troubetzkoy, who won the Targa Florio that year. In his teenage years, Reventlow’s money afforded him the latest in exotic cars, which led to his involvement in motor racing. In Hollywood, Reventlow became friends with fellow auto enthusiast James Dean and competed in club events around California…

Cavalcando una rivoluzione   Siamo nel 1964 ; Padroncino di due autotreni, percorsi stradali inadeguati, assenza di autostrade, automezzi inadeguati, autisti ubriachi, strade e stradine per evitare la tassa d`entrata (Dazio; imposta dagli antichi romani), inseguimenti polizieschi al limite di ogni ragione e oltre, tanto da provocare volutamente incidenti e tamponamenti, distruggendo gli automezzi inseguitori, salvaguardando l`incolumità umana, azzardi di compere di stoccaggi di varie merceologie onde ottenere sconti importanti al fine di realizzare vendite rapide con il vantaggio di usufruire denaro fresco e veloce. Dopo otto anni di questa vita avventurosa capita veloce l`inaspettato; Nel rientrare da un viaggio sulla statale Flaminia, in un punto di controllo, uomini vestiti da Polizia stradale e altri in borghese a mano armata mi rapinano dei mezzi con 1250 televisori per mercanzia. Erano anni in cui non esistevano assicurazioni per la merce cosidetta in nero e pertanto tutto mi fu obbligato a pagare. In 1946, a young French war correspondent photographer his stopover in Tahiti, when he returned to France from Indochina, chose to settle in Punaauia. Adolphe Sylvain, a public works engineer by training, has just participated in the Libération de Paris as a tank driver in General Leclerc’s 2nd DB. He took the opportunity to fix some of the famous photos of the liberation with his Rolleiflex. Arrived in Tahiti, he married a superb vahiné, named Jeanine Tehani, and became a correspondent for major international magazines while covering Polynesian news for Pathé-Journal. He films and photographs the arrival of the famous Kon-Tiki by Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl, or the return of Alain Gerbault’s ashes to Bora Bora. In 1948, Sylvain settled for a while on Huahine, an island preserved from the Society archipelago, to launch an open-air cinema – as Jacques Brel did in Hiva Oa. In 1949, he created the first Polynesian record company, Mareva, being himself a songwriter. The same year, at the request of the governor, he and Emmanuel d’Astier de la Vigerie set up the bases of Radio Tahiti, the ancestor of the current RFO. For obvious reasons he dropped his first name Adolphe.

A musician since childhood, on Tuesdays Josef Sudek gave “concerts in his studio on Ujezd Street in Prague with a selection from his precious collection of classical recordings.” When the Iron curtain fell on Eastern Europe, Sudek could get rare music from the West through a mysterious correspondant, VK, whose address Room 224, Palais des Nations, Genève remained reachable through all the Cold War years. The photographer sent his favorite photographic prints, with desideratas on the versos and received precious vinyl disc which allowed him to follow on his prestigious Tuesday concerts in a silent city.

Peter, 1976. Boris Smelov prononce “Pi’ter”, les Américains disent “Leningrad”. Il fait froid comme souvent, les habitants résistent dans cette ville de Pierre, formant déjà la troisième génération d’habitants déplacés dans leur propre ville. Les anciens appartements, modestes, bourgeois ou aristocratiques, ont été fractionnés et sont devenus “communautaires”, les pièces techniques, ou ce qu’il en reste, sont partagées par différentes familles. Dans cet espace clos, s’organisent des activités culturelles, pâles reflets de l’énergie créatrice des premières années de la révolution. Les artistes des années 1920 qui ne sont pas partis sont morts, et la génération suivante, celle du Réalisme soviétique, est fatiguée. Et puis il se passe quelque chose.

Born on 10 March 1925, Fernando joined Guatemala during the «Spring» of Jacobo Arbenz government, where he met Che Guevara. After the 1954 CIA-orchestrated coup, he crossed the Mexican border and learnt Mural Painting with Siqueiros for eight years. Until the Mexican police wake him up at 6 am on a 1962 morning. He went back to Colombia, leaving behind hundreds of drawings and paintings … We reproduce large excerpt of an article published in the Espectador, during his first recent Bogotá exhibition.
