14.09.2024 SENIGALLIA PHOTO AUCTION OF RESTRICTED IMAGES WILL BE NEXT SATURDAY

 “There is a charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable,” (Mark Twain). Now that they’re restricted, vintage photographs may well become more desirable. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

ASTA DI SENIGALLIA

Save the Date

“Forensic Aesthetics” auction will take place on Saturday, September 14 2024, 3 pm Rome Time. Alle ore 15.00.

This is a live auction, young Raphael Plantureux will hold the hammer.

The catalog (Ebook) is available online on drouot.com.

All the images, all the reproductions seem to be missing when you access the Drouot.com website tagged restricted “18+”.

“There is a charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable” wrote Mark Twain. Now that they’re restricted, vintage photographs may well become more desirable.

In fact, the images are present and accessible, but you need a Drouot.com account to do so. This means that minors have no access. This complies with the law, which is presumably stricter for the violence of the past than that of the present. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll be able to see the reproduction taking shape behind the cover.

You can also get the pdf of the illustrated catalogue or ask a paper copy in Senigallia.

The disturbing image is one of the first denunciations of the civilian victims of war during the bombardment and siege of Paris in 1870-1871. The artist is Italian-born Gaudenzio Marconi, famous for his nude models for artists.

Seven decades before Robert Capa and Guerda Taro, the photographer devised a particularly powerful composition to denounce war and bombing.

Our age, which glorifies victims more than heroes, finds it hard to make a judgement on his partly-composed photographic works.

This image is so rare that, faced with the impossibility of obtaining a period print other than that in the collections of Musee Carnavalet, a mid-twentieth-century historian commissioned this silver print.

The catalog features over 100 vintage photographs that might illustrate Michel Foucault’s words. Anthropometric portraits of the judicial police, crime scenes, investigators in the field, clues, murder weapons and objects, autopsies, some prison scenes.

They were chosen by the Spring Internship students, 2024.
